Bird & Bug Houses
We all know that nature is having a hard time keeping up with habitat destruction. Insect and bird species are declining at an alarming rate. There is some hope if we all do whatever we can to help. On this page you will find an assortment of bird and bug houses to help transform your garden into a haven for wildlife.
Everyone knows what a bird house is, but what is a bug house? A bug house functions in the same way as a bird house. It allows insects a place to shelter and raise their young. The majority of insects attracted to bug houses are of the beneficial variety. They feed on the destructive insects and can assist with bringing ecological balance into your garden.
I use old termite eaten wood (minus the termites) in my bug houses for a couple reasons.
It's beautiful. The paterns created by the termites have a natural beauty.
It uses a waste product that cannot be used for other woodorking projects.
It's smooth. Insects, and especially their larvae have soft bodies and any jaggedness in a bug hotel could be deadly. Termites make naturally smooth tunnels, which prove to be perfect for other insects as well.
